Blue Andalusians originated from crossing black and white (also known as “Splash”) birds. As a Blue, black and splash Andalusians
hanging out on the porch!A unique genetic feature of this breed is the constant recurrence in the offspring of not only blue chicks, but also the black, white, and black-white colors used in the original. Only blue birds can be shown under American Poultry Association rules.

When mating birds of these different colors, the results will generally be:
Black x Blue = 50% Black / 50% Blue
Blue x Blue = 25% Black / 50% Blue / 25% Splash
Black x Splash = 100% Blue
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue / 50% Splash

The best quality blue birds come from mating two blue birds, but as you can see, that produces only 50% blue birds. However, mating a black with a splash will produce 100% blue, but they will be of much inferior quality. This is why you see washed out pale grey birds from many hatchery flocks – it is easier and cheaper to mate black with splash and get 100% ‘blue” chicks, even though they are not as good quality.
